Suppose two departments have just been merged and you need to know whether they now work together. Microsoft Viva Insights already has network analysis for that question. But if you need to know whom people trust for advice, or who helped resolve a handoff, meeting and message metadata cannot supply the missing context. That is when an alternative to Microsoft Viva Insights for ONA becomes useful.
Disclosure: HiveHR publishes this comparison and is one of the products listed. It is based on public documentation, not a controlled trial of the platforms. Product capabilities were checked on September 29, 2026; confirm availability, licensing, and processing terms with each vendor.
What Viva Insights already does
Viva Insights advanced analysis combines Microsoft 365 collaboration data with organizational attributes. Microsoft documents person-to-person and group-to-group network queries, plus a change management ONA query for examining collaboration after a reorganization. For an organization whose work is largely in Microsoft 365, this is a substantial starting point.
It would be a mistake to dismiss Viva as a meeting dashboard and assume any other graph tool is automatically deeper. Depth depends on the relationship being measured. A meeting records contact; it does not tell you who sought expert advice or whether the help worked. A detailed graph cannot recover meaning that the source never captured.
When to look beyond Viva Insights
Write down the decision first. If you need to see whether contact between departments changed after a merger, assess Viva's existing analysis and the coverage of your Microsoft 365 data. Buying another platform before that check may add complexity without improving the answer.
A different method makes sense when you need a network of specific relationships such as advice or help, when work spans multiple software ecosystems, or when you want a continuous record of meaningful actions people choose to make. A change program that needs consultant-led diagnosis is another case.
Changing vendors does not fix source bias. If factory, field, or regional staff are missing from the system being measured, they will be missing from the map too. Ask about that before comparing dashboards.
Viva Insights alternatives by data source
HiveHR: context from explicit work signals
HiveHR builds relationships from actions inside the platform: recognition for help, ideas, and reported problems. The signal carries its own context, making it easier to investigate what kind of help connects teams or where work relies repeatedly on one person. HiveHR does not analyze email or calendars and cannot map every workplace contact. Sparse participation means a narrow picture. Our HiveHR versus Polinode comparison examines this trade-off in detail.
Polinode: surveys and flexible network research
Polinode suits an analyst who wants to define a relationship question, run a network survey, upload an existing network, or use passive integrations available to organizational customers. It offers visualization and network measures. That flexibility calls for a clear network boundary, a well-phrased question, and validation of the result. With surveys, nonresponse matters as much as the graph itself.
Worklytics: metadata across work systems
Where collaboration spans Microsoft 365, Slack, Google Workspace, and other corporate tools, examine Worklytics. The vendor describes passive ONA connectors and group-level reporting. Its privacy page says it does not analyze message content and applies a minimum group size of eight. These are vendor claims; verify the actual fields collected, access controls, and processing terms during procurement and a pilot.
Innovisor: support for organizational change
Innovisor presents itself as a change advisory firm using organizational networks, with ready-to-go and tailored programs. It may fit a leadership team seeking help with the research design and action after diagnosis, rather than a self-service analytics product alone. Compare the scope of the engagement, collection method, and handover, not a feature count.
Comparison at a glance
| Option | Primary evidence | Useful when | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viva Insights | Microsoft 365 interactions and organizational data | Comparing group contact and change over time | Contact does not explain advice or trust |
| HiveHR | Explicit actions inside the product | Context of help, ideas, and problems matters | Only recorded actions are visible |
| Polinode | Surveys, imports, available passive sources | A custom relationship or research design is needed | Requires method and data-quality checks |
| Worklytics | Metadata across work systems | Collaboration spans several tools | Contact frequency is not relationship quality |
| Innovisor | Evidence gathered in an advisory engagement | Research and change support are both needed | Confirm project method and deliverables |
How to choose an alternative
Use one decision as the test. For example: “Why do customer requests stall when they move from sales to support?” Ask each vendor what relationship it would measure, over what period, whose work is represented, and what action the result could justify. If the answer is only a striking network picture, the research question still needs work.
- Check coverage. Which teams and channels are absent, and will the report disclose the gap?
- Check privacy. Who can see person-level ties, how long are records kept, and can rows be exported? Our guide to ONA privacy and ethics goes deeper.
- Check interpretation. Can employees confirm or challenge the explanation before leaders act on it?
If the question itself is unsettled, start with a focused 30-day ONA pilot. It exposes data limits faster than a long feature checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Does Microsoft Viva Insights include organizational network analysis?
Yes. Microsoft documents network collaboration queries and a change management ONA analysis. Check the roles and configuration required in your organization.
Is Viva Insights or Polinode better for ONA?
Assess Viva first for interaction patterns inside Microsoft 365. Consider Polinode when you need a survey about expert advice or another specifically defined tie. The question and available data decide.
Can HiveHR replace Viva Insights?
Only for questions answered by help, idea, and problem signals recorded in HiveHR. It does not reproduce Microsoft 365 meeting or communication metrics.
Do we need a separate ONA tool if we use Microsoft 365?
Not necessarily. Test whether Viva's available data answers your question. Add a tool for a specific missing data source or research method.
